Nature's Dangers (or not?) (55104)

What's really out there in the woods? Giant man-eating iguanas? Tigers? Great leaping lemurs? Find out what really lives here and what, if anything, represents a true danger to us.

We'll do just about everything a toddler can do with rocks and pebbles except eat them in this hands-on, beginning geology class

Beach Sculptures (55054)

Calling all artists!  Come to the sandbar in Cabin John Creek to vent your inventive impulses!  Using found materials, the inspiration of Andy Goldsworthy and the muses of sun and water, we'll build sculptures in nature, for nature, and of nature! Wear water worthy shoes. No younger siblings, please.
5 years & up; Fee $4; 2:00 - 3:00pm

Summer Firefly Hike (55064)

Come learn about the beetles with built-in flashlights as we wander at dusk to watch the fireflies light up. All participants must register and pay.

Sunset at the Stream (55235)

Come over to cool off in Cabin John Creek. We'll puddle and poke around to look for creek dwellers. Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes that can get wet. All participants must register and pay. No younger siblings please.

Wild Montgomery: Go Bats! (55247)

As part of the Wild Montgomery program, our resident bat expert, Leslie Sturges, is taking her show on the road.  Join Leslie at Brookside Gardens for a rare opportunity to survey bat fauna in an urban area. We'll use bat detectors to listen to and record bat calls, learn about resident bats species, and more. Meet at Brookside Gardens; rain cancels program.
5 years & up: Free; 8:30 - 9:30pm

Meet the Animals of Locust Grove (55086)

What do the animals at Locust Grove  Nature Center eat?  Where did they come from?   Learn about the animals' natural habits and habitats, meet and watch them eat.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.
3 – 12 years; Fee $3; 1:00 - 1:45pm

Raindrops to Rainbows (55073)

 How are rainbows formed?  Are all rainbows the same colors? Follow the adventures of a raindrop and the sun to see how all of the colors of a rainbow are formed.  Colorful craft included.

Discover the relationship between butterflies and flowers and caterpillars and leaves as we probe through our bustling butterfly garden.

Water Explorers (55087)

Learn about the nature and behavior of water, and meet some of our local underwater residents. We'll get into the stream, nets in hand, and actively explore.  Children under 8 must have an adult accompany them in the stream. All participants must wear shoes that can get wet (no open-toed shoes, please!) and all participants must register; no fee for adults.
6 – 12 years; Fee $4; 10:30 - 11:30 am

Thursday, August 14
 From Cow to Cone (55097)

 Bring the whole family to this program and follow the milk route from the cow to ice cream cone. We'll make our own ice cream in a variety of ways, from the old fashioned crank to the fast rolling ball. Come mix it, churn it, roll it and taste it. All attendees must register and pay.
2 years & up; Fee: $4; 1:00 - 2:30pm

Summer Bugs (55240)

We love bugs and we want to share our appreciation of these (mostly) winged wonders. Bugs are easy to find and fun to watch. And anyone can learn enough to impress friends and neighbors with their entomological expertise. All participants must register and pay.
