Introduction to Area
This Community-Based Planning area is bounded by Rock Creek on the east and the City of Rockville on the north. The southern boundary includes Western Avenue and the Potomac River, and the western boundary includes I-270 and I-495 (See map of area)This area is comprised of six Metro stations, the major employment center of Rock Spring Park, several federal facilities including the NIH Campus, and stable residential neighborhoods. The area includes the following areas:
- Bethesda Chevy-Chase
- Friendship Heights Central Business District
- Bethesda Central Business District
- Westbard
- North Bethesda
- Rock Spring Park
- Grosvenor
- White Flint
- Twinbrook
Recent master plans and sector plans in this Community-Based Planning area acknowledge the established and stable nature of the residential neighborhoods. These plans also recognize that the central business districts of Bethesda and Friendship Heights, the transit station areas of Grosvenor, White Flint and Twinbrook, and the commercial centers of Westbard and Wildwood serve as community focal points for the surrounding residential neighborhoods. Rock Spring Park and the NIH Campus serve as major employment areas for both the area and region. The MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike) and the Metro rail system provide major transportation links within this geographic area.
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase/North Bethesda Work Program emphasizes the coordination of development within the commercial centers and employment areas through regulatory review to assure that individual projects cohesively fit into development patterns envisioned by the sector and master plans. It also continues the work to protect and maintain the residential neighborhoods throughout the area.
