Introduction
to Area
This Community-Based
Planning area is generally bounded by Northwest Branch and
the Capital Beltway (I-495) on the north, and Rock Creek Park
to the west. Prince George's County is the eastern boundary
and the District of Columbia is located to the south. This
area includes the following communities:
- Silver
Spring Central Business District (CBD)
- North
Silver Spring
- West
Silver Spring
- City
of Takoma Park
- East
Silver Spring
- Four
Corners
The
Community-Based Planning Team has recently revised the master
plans for all of these areas. This major master plan effort
utilizes the revised and streamlined preparation process adopted
by the Planning Board and County Council.
The
Silver Spring Central Business District is the focus of a
major revitalization symbolized by the County's investment
in a large Urban Renewal Project in the Core. As a result,
the Community-Based Planning Team will be involved in numerous
regulatory reviews of redevelopment projects. The success
of the overall revitalization will have major implications
on the economic stability and residential quality of life
in the entire community-based planning area and beyond.
This
Community-Based Planning area also contains the City of Takoma
Park which was recently unified in Montgomery County. The
development of a new master plan for the City of Takoma Park
is the first by the County to plan comprehensively for the
unified City. As such, it involved cooperative, closely coordinated
effort with the municipal government and the citizens of Takoma
Park.
