Legacy Open Space Private Donations

Private Donations

The long-term success of the Legacy Open Space program depends on the extent to which it becomes a true public/private partnership. All stakeholders in the community will need to work together if we are to achieve our goal of preserving the “best of the best” open space resources for future generations to enjoy.

Local tax dollars can help to leverage key property acquisitions, but it is unlikely that they will be ample enough to achieve all of the Legacy Open Space program’s goals. Private contributions of cash, property, and easements, as well as state and federal support, will also be needed.

How can you help?

Gifts of Property or Easements: Donations of land and property easements can provide tax advantages to the donor, as well as the opportunity to leave a personal legacy. If your property is currently on the Legacy Open Space program’s “wish list”, or if you feel it might meet the criteria for being included, contact the Legacy Open Space Program Manager (301-650-4360) to explore options. If your property is not listed in the Legacy Open Space Master Plan, visit Application for New Sites for consideration section of this web page to submit your property information. The Legacy program staff can assist you in analyzing the options available to you in considering such a gift.

Estate Gifts, and Gifts of Cash and Securities: The non-profit Montgomery Parks Foundation, Inc., has established a Legacy Fund to receive donations from private individuals, estates, corporations and foundations interested in supporting the Legacy Open Space Program. All donations to the Legacy Fund are used to acquire new Legacy properties and to achieve the program’s related goals.

Cash gifts, gifts of stock and other securities, as well as real estate gifts that have no value as park or conservation land, may be donated to the Parks Foundation’s Legacy Fund in memory or in honor of friends and family. All real estate donations to the fund are placed on the market, sold, and turned into cash to support the Legacy Open Space Program.
