Weed Warriors
In 1999, Montgomery Parks Forest Ecologist Carole Bergmann created the Weed Warrior program In response to the non-native invasive plant (NNIs) problem. The program's goal is to educate citizens about identification and management of NNIs. Certified Weed Warriors have logged more than 23,000 hours to date, and have made a valuable contribution to the control of non-native invasive vegetation in Montgomery County parks.
Today, the Weed Warrior program has two components:
- Certified Weed Warriors
Volunteers must complete a two-part online course and participate in a two-hour field training session with a forest ecologist. Certified Weed Warriors will then be authorized to work anywhere on Montgomery County Park & Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) parkland, on their own schedules and at their own pace.

- Special Project Weed Warriors
This component of the Weed Warrior program was added in 2007. It gives community members the opportunity to learn about and work on invasive plants in their parks, without making the commitment to become full-fledged Weed Warriors. Under the supervision of a staff specialist, special workdays take place throughout the year in small and large parks throughout Montgomery County.
