Wheaton Regional Park is nestled in a forested area of Wheaton, Maryland. The park was established in 1960, incorporating several large parcels of land into one of Montgomery County’s finest and largest parks. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational and educational opportunities within its 536 acres. Take a ride on the train, go horseback riding, have a picnic, go fishing, ice skate or play ball. Relax and tour the botanical gardens and conservatory, attend a nature program, or traverse the trails and discover the park’s beauty.
Many of our facilities accommodate people with disabilities. The miniature train and adventure playground are designed with unique equipment to assist those with mobility challenges. Brookside Nature Center, Brookside Gardens, picnic areas, and restrooms are also accessible.
Please note there are three separate entrances into Wheaton Regional Park. These are clearly marked on the park map. The park amenities below have been organized by the appropriate entrance to make access easier. Click on any of the links below for more information.

Picnic and Playground
Picnic tables and cooking grills are available throughout the Shorefield Area. Picnic shelters accommodating up to 40 people are available by permit only. Call the Park Permit Office for fee information and availability. The adventure playground has a variety of exciting features and unique environments for children. Restrooms and drinking fountains are operational from April to October.
Miniature
Train and Historic Carousel
All aboard! Climb on board a replica of an 1863 C. P. Huntington engine and passenger cars for a scenic tour through park woods and meadows, or enjoy an enchanting ride on the Herschell Spillman Company 1915 turn-of-the century musical carousel complete with 33 jumping horses, three zebras and two chariots. The train and carousel operate weekends only in April and September and daily from May through August.
Pine
Lake
The shores
of 5-acre Pine Lake offer several beautiful spots for fishing,
picnicking, or just relaxing. The lake is stocked with several
species of fish. Anglers must comply with the Maryland state
fishing regulations.
Trails
Our park provides 11 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, ranging from a flat paved Heart Smart trail to natural surface trails that weave through the forest and around the lake. Four miles of hard-surface trails meander through the forest for walkers, children in strollers, people using wheelchairs, skaters, and bicyclists. Trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Gardens
Brookside Gardens is a fifty-acre, award-winning horticultural display garden that includes an indoor conservatory complemented by changing displays of new and interesting plants and gardens. Educational programs for children and adults are offered. Please note that picnicking and dog walking are not permitted in the Gardens. Seasonal programs include the Wings of Fancy live butterfly exhibit and the Garden of Lights Show. Brookside Gardens is available for rent for social and corporate events. Brookside
Nature Center
Brookside Nature Center provides fun and educational naturalist-led experiences and maintains exhibits interpreting local natural history. The pioneer homestead, wildlife viewing areas, self-guided trail, wheelchair accessible interpretive boardwalk, and native gardens add to the center’s uniqueness. Programs are available year round for families and individuals of all ages. Special field trip and group programs are also available. Call the Nature Center or visit the website for programming opportunities and special events.
Hours of operation: Tuesdays - Saturdays: 9am - 5pm. Sundays: 1pm - 5pm. Closed on Mondays and all major holidays. Trails are open daily from dawn to dusk.

Riding Stables
Enjoy an escorted trail ride, learn a new sport or enhance your riding skills at the Wheaton Park Stables. Riding lessons for novice through advanced levels are available in the indoor riding arena or in the outdoor facility. The Stables also offer children’s summer camps, boarding, and guided trail rides through the park’s natural surface bridle paths. Frank Rubini Athletic Complex
Enjoy a variety of outdoor sports at Wheaton Regional Park’s F. Frank Rubini Athletic Complex.
Four softball fields and two baseball fields are provided for day and evening use. Permits must be obtained from the Park Permit Office to use the ball fields. The outdoor basketball court and four handball courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tennis and Court Facilities
Six outdoor tennis courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are lighted for day and evening use. The air-conditioned and heated Wheaton Indoor Tennis Facility is open year-round and offers an additional six courts that require reservations. This indoor facility offers group and private lessons, recreational clinics, restringing services, a pro shop, changing rooms, and showers. Party rentals are available. Ice
Arena and In-Line
Skating Facilities
The athletic
complex also features the Wheaton Ice Arena. Open year round,
the arena offers an assortment of programs and services including lessons and
rental time. Sessions are available for the general public, and rental
skates are available.
Open April through September, the Wheaton In-Line Skating Facility is a National Hockey League-sized, covered facility available for rental by hockey teams or leagues, or by special interest groups and individuals. The in-line facility is open October through March for ice rentals. Call Wheaton Ice Arena at 301-649-3640 for schedule information and fees, and for information about in-line skating.
Dog Park
M-NCPPC opened its first Dog Park at Wheaton Regional Park in January 2003.This area is approximately a half acre in size and is enclosed with a 6-foot chain link fence. It is a popular meeting spot and exercise area for local dog owners and their canine friends.

Tips for Visiting
Wheaton Regional Park parking regulations are strictly enforced.
- Park in designated areas only.
- No alcoholic beverages permitted.
- Pets must be kept on a leash.
- Buses require parking permits and are not allowed in the park on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
