Oakley Log Cabin

Oakley Cabin is a premier publicly owned African-American historic site in Montgomery County. Built in the 1820s, it was first used by slaves on the Oakley/Dorsey farm, and later by free black families as part of a roadside community. The cabin is fully furnished to depict various periods of its history and development, and provides hands-on experiences for visitors and researchers.

The Friends of Oakley Cabin and the Underground Railroad sponsor a variety of special events throughout the year that allow the public to tour this historic treasure. The cabin is open for free tours on Saturdays from mid-April through October, from Noon - 4 p.m. For more information on volunteering at the cabin, please call 301-563-3405.

Historic guides needed at Oakley Cabin

If you're interested in African-American history and enjoy interacting with the public, we hope you'll consider becoming a trained historic guide (docent) at Oakley Cabin.

Training begins with an online, web-based session, followed by an on-site training session at Oakley Cabin on Saturday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m. You must complete the online training course before attending the onsite training.

Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older, and be able to commit to six Saturdays per year (or weekdays, if a group tour is scheduled and you are available) April through October.

For more information and to sign up for docent training, please call 301-563-3405.
