On November 1, 1864, Maryland freed by a new state constitution all those held in bondage within its boundaries. Celebrate the freedom from enslavement in Maryland with a hike on the Underground Railroad, a tour of a slave cabin and a museum on slavery, living history demonstrations and great food! Download the day's full program of activities, along with directions/map for each of the participating sites.


Hikers on the Underground Railroad Experience Trail.1. Underground Railroad Experience Trail Guided Hikes

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Hikes begin at 10am, 10:30am, 11am, 11:30am & 12 noon.)
Woodlawn Manor - 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring, MD 20860
Trained Underground Railroad trail guides will lead interpretive hikes of the 2 mile trail from Woodlawn Manor to the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House. Parking available at Woodlawn Manor. At the end of each hike, shuttle buses will transport hikers from Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House back to the Woodlawn Manor parking lot between 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, call 301-650-4373 or visit www.UndergroundRRExperience.org

2. Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery

The museum and art gallery will be open to visitors FREE of charge for Emancipation Day. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Lunch for purchase by Ribs on the Run will be available at the museum.

to the museum: From the 495 Beltway, take New Hampshire Avenue exit North. Continue 11.5 miles on New Hampshire Avenue crossing Routes 198 and 108. Go 1 mile. SLOW DOWN. Make a left onto Brooke Road. 3. Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park

The Maryland Emancipation Day program at Oakley Cabin will include guided cabin tours, living history demonstrations, refreshments, spiritual readings and songs, archaeology digs, a keynote address by Fath Davis Ruffins, curator of the National Museum of American History, Behring Center; and for the kids, an Underground Railroad puppet show by puppeteer Schroeder Cherry. 4. Josiah Henson Historic Site / "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
