Census 2000 Data Results:
Resident Population and Apportionment Counts
According
to the first release of Census 2000, the nation's resident population
was 281,421,906 on April 1st, 2000. The new figure marks a
13.2 percent gain over the 248,709,873 counted in the 1990 census. Maryland's
resident population grew by 10.8 percent from 4,781,468 in 1990 to 5,296,486
in 2000.
More
detailed information from Census 2000 will be available beginning with
the release of the redistricting summary data file (Public Law 94-171)
by April 2001. This data release will include county and local level populations
that will be used to redraw congressional and state legislative districts.
