Transportation
issues are often among the top concerns Montgomery County
residents. The range of issues includes roadway congestion,
transit service, bikeways and sidewalks, and driver and pedestrian
safety. The Montgomery County Planning Board plays a key role
in planning for a transportation network that will serve the
County well into the future..
When new master plans are prepared, Department of Park and Planning staff prepare a detailed analysis of transportation issues in the planning area and develop recommendations for the future improvements needed to support expected growth. The Montgomery County Planning Board reviews these recommendations, along with input from the general public, and provides its guidance to the Montgomery Council. Once master plans are adopted, the Department and the Board work to implement the plans with state and county transportation agencies and with developers during the subdivision review process.
One of the most important services provided by the Transportation Planning staff is providing information to citizens about the current transportation system as well as planned improvements. Citizens with transportation-related questions are welcome to e-mail the Transportation Planning staff or stop by the Montgomery Regional Office in Silver Spring during business hours.
County planners and the Planning Board continue to monitor the progress of the Intercounty Connector. Stay apprised of the ICC’s status, including progress with the ICC bike route.
LATR/PAMR guidelines help ensure that development in Montgomery County is accompanied by appropriate, sufficient transportation facilities. The Planning Board and planning staff use the guidelines to estimate the impacts of development on the transportation network and determine effective ways to mitigate that impact.
